Shelter manager Lisa Hewitt peeled the note off carefully and read it aloud to her colleague Dan. It said: “This is not what you think it is. Please be careful. Do not house with other cats. I’m sorry.” There was no signature, no phone number, nothing else. Lisa looked down at the animal, which sat perfectly still, watching her with an intensity that made her uncomfortable.
