Just as they began to pull, a deep crack echoed across the floe. The ice shuddered, and the gap holding the cub widened slightly with a sickening groan. The cub yelped and slid downward another few inches. The crew froze in horror. For a heartstopping moment, they feared the floe would split apart entirely.
