The tubes were anchored at intervals by heavy weights, clearly designed to keep them taut against strong currents. As they descended, the water grew darker and colder. Their flashlights illuminated strange growths and barnacles clinging to the tubes. The seafloor was still out of sight, hidden in deepening gloom.
